Organisation
The organisational structure of UFES comprises the following bodies: the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s Office, three governing councils, Teaching centres, Superintendencies and Secretariats and Supplementary bodies.
Rectorate – It is the highest executive body of the university and is responsible for planning, managing, coordinating and supervising all the activities of the institution, as well as establishing agreements and partnerships to implement projects related to university policy, to aid in the development and visibility of academic activities. Its responsibility includes – Administration; Outreach Programs; Personnel Management; Student Assistance and Citizenship; Undergraduate Courses; Research and Post-Graduation; Planning and Citizenship; the Superintendence of Culture and Communication, Secretariats for Communication, Culture and International Office.
Pro-rectorates – They supervise the day-to-day operations of the University, providing administrative and academic support to the Vice-Chancellor's Office. The pro-rectorates are as follows: Administration (Proad), Extension (Proex), Human Resources Management (Progep), Undergraduate Studies (Prograd), Research and Postgraduate Studies (PRPPG), Planning and Institutional Development (Proplan) and Affirmative Action and Student Support (Propaes).
Higher Councils
- University Council (CUn) – This is UFES’s highest deliberative and advisory body on matters of university policy, administration, finance and planning. It is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and comprises the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, the directors of the 11 teaching centres, four Pro-Vice-Chancellors (for Administration, Planning, Affirmative Action and Student Welfare, and Human Resources), the director of the Cassiano Antonio Moraes University Hospital, three representatives of the academic staff, three representatives of the administrative and technical staff, and five student representatives. Each council member has an alternate.
- Council for Teaching, Research and Extension (Cepe) – This is UFES’s central body responsible for supervising teaching, research and extension, with both decision-making and advisory functions. It is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and comprises the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, two representatives of the teaching staff from each teaching centre; the Pro-Vice-Chancellors for Undergraduate Studies, Extension, and Research and Postgraduate Studies; two representatives of the technical and administrative staff; and six student representatives. Each member has an alternate.
- Board of Trustees (CUr) – This is the deliberative and advisory body responsible for economic and financial oversight. It monitors and supervises the University’s budget implementation. It is responsible for approving the University’s monthly financial statements and annual accounts, presented by the Vice-Chancellor, so that they may ultimately be submitted to the Office of the Comptroller General (CGU). The board consists of a chair, a vice-chair, three representatives of the technical and administrative staff appointed by Cepe, three representatives of the teaching staff appointed by CUn, one representative from the Ministry of Education (MEC), one from the community, one from the technical and administrative staff, and one from the students.
Teaching Centres
These are academic and administrative units that bring together courses in related fields of study. Each centre is led by a director and a deputy director – with four-year terms – and its highest decision-making body is the Departmental Council, comprising the heads of each department, coordinators of undergraduate and graduate courses, and representatives of the administrative staff and students. The centres are responsible for developing teaching, research and outreach activities, in coordination with the coordinators of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and the academic departments.

Academic Departments
The department forms the basis of the University’s academic structure. It brings together academic staff by field of expertise and core activities (teaching, research and outreach). The department’s highest governing body is the departmental council, comprising all its academic staff and student representatives, who make up 1-5 (one-fifth) of the total membership. The head of the department is elected by the departmental council every two years, and the student body may be consulted through a direct vote. The departments are linked to the teaching centres.
Academic Committees
Each undergraduate programme is coordinated by a committee comprising lecturers from the departments offering modules within that programme and student representatives, chaired by one of the lecturers. Graduate programmes are coordinated by a committee comprising permanent lecturers and student representatives, chaired by one of the lecturers. The committee coordinator is responsible, amongst other duties, for planning the course’s subject offerings each semester and advising students on matters relating to their academic life.
Superintendencies and Secretariats
These are administrative units directly linked to the Rector’s Office. UFES has five superintendencies and seven secretariats. These are: Superintendency of Distance Learning (SEAD), Superintendency of Infrastructure (SI), Superintendency of Projects and Innovation (SPIN), Superintendency of Information Technology (STI) and Superintendency of Budget and Finance (SOF); Secretariat for Affirmative Action and Diversity (SAAD), Secretariat for Institutional Evaluation (Seavin), Secretariat for Communication (Secom), Secretariat for Culture (Secult), Secretariat for Inclusion and Accessibility (Siac), Secretariat for Higher Collegiate Bodies (Socs) and Secretariat for International Relations (SRI).
Supplementary Bodies
These are administrative support units that facilitate the University’s activities. They include: the Integrated Library System (SIB), the UFES Publishing House (Edufes), the Cassiano Antonio Moraes University Hospital (Hucam), the Institute of Dentistry (Ioufes), the Institute of Technology (Itufes), the Information Technology Directorate (STI) and the Infrastructure Directorate (SI).
